Cheaper printers exist. The difference is usually build quality, whether a manufacturer warranty is included, and whether anyone will help when it fails mid-queue.
58mm or 80mm — the only decision that really matters
80mm is commonly used for wider retail and supermarket receipts. The extra width fits more line items per page and prints a more readable layout. If you sell baskets rather than single items, this is usually the one.
58mm is narrower, cheaper to run, and takes less counter space. It suits a shop selling one or two items at a time — a kiosk, a pharmacy counter, a service desk.

Why thermal, and what it actually costs to run
Thermal printers have no ink cartridge and no ribbon. Heat marks the paper directly, so the only consumable is the roll — which is why the running cost of a busy till stays low and why there is nothing to run out of at the worst moment except paper.
It also means paper is your entire consumable budget. Keeping spare rolls behind the counter is the cheapest insurance in the shop.
Do you need one at all?

Buy a printer when customers expect paper, when you need a copy for your own records, or when the queue moves faster than a phone number can be typed.

A receipt printer earns its place fastest next to a cash drawer, because a drawer wired to the printer springs open automatically when a sale prints — so the drawer opens for a transaction rather than for whoever felt like opening it. Add a barcode scanner and the whole counter speeds up at once.
