The PAYE bands from 1 September 2026

PAYE is charged band by band on chargeable income — taxable pay after the employee's SSNIT. Each slice of income is taxed only at its own band's rate, so moving into a higher band never reduces take-home pay.

Monthly chargeable incomeRate
First GH₵5880%
Next GH₵805%
Next GH₵10010%
Next GH₵2,90017.5%
Next GH₵16,00025%
Next GH₵30,33230%
Above GH₵50,00035%

What changed: the tax-free first band rose from GH₵490 to GH₵588 a month, and the bands above it were reshaped, under the Income Tax (Amendment) Act, 2026 (Act 1178). If a payslip for September 2026 or later still starts at GH₵490, it is using the old bands. Source: GRA — PAYE.

How PAYE is worked out, step by step

  1. Gross pay = basic salary + taxable allowances.
  2. SSNIT: deduct the employee's 5.5% of basic salary.
  3. Reliefs: deduct any voluntary provident fund contribution, up to 16.5% of basic salary.
  4. Chargeable income = what is left. Apply the bands above to it.
  5. Take-home pay = gross pay − SSNIT − voluntary pension − PAYE.

The employer separately pays 13% of basic salary to SSNIT. That is a cost to the business, not a deduction from the employee.
